Lucinda Merry-Browne

Founding Artistic Director

Lucinda Merry-Browne has founded five theater ventures, and built each of them into successful programs under her guidance. For Compass Rose Theater, she founded the theater to be both an educational institution and a professional theater, combining both of her strongest areas of expertise. Blending her experience as a theater educator and a professional actor and director, she founded Compass Rose to create a teaching theater, rooted in education, but offering outstanding quality in its productions. Learn More



Mary Ruth Cowgill

Company Manager

Mary Ruth Cowgill received her MA from the University of Baltimore and a BS from Towson University. She has worked for Compass Rose since 2014. She has had a life-long love of theater and is happy to be able to use her management skills in the backstage theater environment. She is the former Graphics Manager at the American Red Cross, Central MD Chapter, and Graphic Designer at the Baltimore International Culinary College. She lives in Annapolis with her husband and two cats, Jack Sparrow and Maya Angelou.


Katie Boothroyd

Coordinator of Programs & Grants, Resident Playwright

Katie Boothroyd works as an active teaching artist, actress, and playwright. She comes to Annapolis from her home state of Iowa via New York City. Her short play Conversations We Could Have Had premiered at NYSummerfest in New York City in August 2017. Select roles include Rachel Brown in Inherit the Wind and Lady Anne in Camelot at Compass Rose Theater, Susan in [title of show] at the Des Moines Playhouse, Turtle in Frog and Toad at City Circle Acting Co., and Meg Brockie in Brigadoon at Iowa City Community Theater. Post graduate directing credits include Damn Yankees and I’m Herbert for Iowa City Community Theater,Cinderella and Grease for Williamsburg High School, selections from 9 to 5 and The Book of Mormon for Waukee High School, and The Importance of Being Earnest for the Young Actors’ Studio at Compass Rose Theater. Katie graduated from the University of Iowa with degrees in English and Theater Arts.
